Kobe Bryant joined elite company with his scoring binge, joining Michael Jordan who performed the feat for the Chicago Bulls in 1987, former Laker Elgin Baylor in 1962, and scoring machine Wilt Chamberlain for the Warriors from 1961-63. Chamberlain scored 50 or more points in three straight games an amazing 12 times within a span of 18 months. The big man had seven consecutive 50-point games in December 1961.
It was the fourth 60-point game of Bryant's career, tying him with Jordan for the second-most 60-point games in a career. Chamberlain holds the record with 32. Bryant had 65 points versus the Portland Trail Blazers six days earlier and 50 points versus the Minnesota Timberwolves two days after that.
Against the Memphis Grizzlies, Bryant went 20-for-37 from the field, including 3-for-7 from 3-pt range, and 17 of 18 from the charity stripe. After the game, he stated that the game was "special" because it came off three straight wins, allowing the team to make up some ground in division.
On joining the aforementioned NBA legends with the record, Bryant said: "Growing up I idolized all of them, from Wilt, to M.J. to Elgin. It's a tremendous honor to be in that same class with those guys and in the history books."
Previously, Memphis had won seven of the past 10 against the Lakers and had won one of two earlier meetings in the season. Memphis center Pau Gasol led his team with 35 points and 15 rebounds. G/F Mike Miller chipped in with 33 points and seven assists. The Grizzlies suffered their 13th loss in its last 16 games. At 17-52, the team owned the league's worst record.
For the Lakers, Lamar Odom was one of only two other teammates to reach double figures, finishing with 20 points and 15 rebounds. Luke Walton contributed 11 points. Los Angeles is 13-5 when Bryant goes over the half-century mark. Legendary "Big Game" James Worthy provides the post-game analysis from the broadcasting studio.
