NBA All-Star Weekend Judged a Success

Held in the still-battered city of New Orleans, the annual NBA All-Star Weekend was judged to a roaring success, by many measures.

While Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant mostly rested his injured pinky finger, Cavalier LeBron James took home more hardware, winning the All-Star MVP trophy. Soaring Orlando Magic big man Dwight Howard captured the slam-dunk contest, and many would say, the entire weekend.

The league also managed to burnish its world image by sparing no effort to do its part to assist in New Orleans' recovery. New Orleans Hornets' guard Chris Paul said that the way the NBA reached out to the community was "something I'll never forget."

Hundreds of volunteers, spread out throughout the city helped in all types of tasks, such as painting houses and refurbishing deserted playgrounds. The once-bustling metropolis is still reeling from the destruction wrought by Hurricane Katrina, some two and a half years ago.

On Saturday, a spectacular competition emerged in the dunk contest between Howard and Minnestoa Timberwolves forward Gerald Green. Assessed by many to have been "down" for the last few years, the competition showcased some well-appreciated innovations that really got the crowds going. The highlight, which will be discussed for years, was of Howard donning a Superman cape and leaping so high for a dunk that he was able to simply throw the ball through the rim, rather than a more traditional dunk. Green got an A+ for creativity when he incredibly blew out a candle situated on the stanchion behind the rim, but it wasn't enough to derail the Howard express.

On Sunday night, the Eastern Conference All-Start defeated their counterparts 134-128, led by James and Boston Celtics guard Ray Allen's sharpshooting. Allen tallied 28 points, including three consecutive 3-pointers in the final three minutes. James scored 27, and capped it off with a monstrous dunk in the last minute.

The Phoenix Suns will host the All-Star game next year.
