Army General Preparing to Take Charge of NBA Officials
July 5 -- Maj. Gen. Ronald L. Johnson, a career military man with an extraordinary résumé, but no NBA ties, was hired last week as the league's senior vice president for referee operations.
The league's credibility was shattered last summer when a veteran referee, Tim Donaghy, admitted to conspiring with gamblers. No one else was formally accused of misconduct. But the scandal has scarred the NBA and raised troubling questions about the integrity of the sport.
The officiating program was previously supervised by Stu Jackson, the executive vice president for basketball operations. League officials explained the restructuring of the department by saying that Jackson's job had simply grown too big. They said the move was not a reflection on Jackson or the director of officials, Ronnie Nunn, who will continue in his position. Nunn will report to Johnson.
