'Birdman' Reinstated to NBA
Former New Orleans Hornet Chris Andersen, nicknamed 'The Birdman" has been cleared by commissioner David Stern to return to the league, after a drug suspension.
Reports indicate that if Anderson passes an up-coming physical examination, he will be re-signed by the Hornets. Before the suspension, he was making $3.5 million a year.
Anderson violated the NBA's drug policy in 2006, in which a player can be disqualified for a fourth positive test for performance-enhancing drugs, or a first positive test for "drugs of abuse." On that list are amphetamine, such as methamphetamine; cocaine; LSD; opiates, including heroin, codeine and morphine; and PCP.
He had not been suspended previously for use of performance-enhancing drugs, though Anderson has never stated which drug he tested positive for, and league does not disclose such information.
The Birdman, who gained the name from his dunks, was averaging 5 points and 5 rebounds in 2006 before being suspended. He had played for three seasons with the Denver Nuggets before joining the Hornets.
