Carmelo Anthony Scores 49 In Nuggets Win

Denver Nuggets forward Carmelo Anthony scored a career-high 49 points to lead his team past the Washington Wizards, 111-100, on Feb. 8.

The All-Star starter shot 19-25, including all 8 of his free throws. The 49 points represented the third-highest scoring game this season.

Anthony, playing on a still sore left ankle that caused him to miss 5 games, surpassed his previous career-high of 45, set against the Philadelphia 76ers on Dec. 27, 2005.

The Wizards double- and triple-teamed Anthony in the final minute to prevent him from scoring again, a decision that drew mild criticism from All-Star teammate Allen Iverson. Iverson, who is usually the scoring heavy himself, has never had a teammate score 49 and said it was "one of the easiest games I ever played."

The scoring heroics didn't sit well with Washington head coach Eddie Jordan, who felt that Anthony was perhaps trying to show his team up. Anthony vehemently disagreed with this assessment

Anthony became the third Nuggets player to go over 40 points this season. He was supported by Iverson's 18 points and forward Kenyon Martin's 16. For Washington, forward Antawn Jamison scored 21, and Nick Young tallied 19.
