Sam Cassell To Sign With Celtics

The long-rumored deal that will bring veteran guard Sam Cassell to the Boston Celtics is expected to be completed soon. According to Cassell's agent, backup duties are anticipated but did not rule out action in "key late-game situations."

A Mecca for grizzled vets, Cassell would Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce, The team is among the favorites to represent the NBA's Eastern Conference in this year's championship series.

The young incumbent starting point guard, Rajon Rondo, who might have to compete with Cassell for playing time down the stretch, said that he was in favor of the move, indicating that he could stand to learn a lot from the wily vet.

The Celtics currently have the best record in the NBA at 46-12, leading the Detroit Pistons by 3½ games for the best record in the East Conference.
