Detroit Piston Wins NBA Citizenship Award

May 5 -- Detroit Pistons guard Chauncey Billups is the 2008 recipient of the J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award.

The award, voted on by the Professional Basketball Writers Association since 1975, is presented annually to an NBA player or coach for outstanding service and dedication to the community.

Billups has been involved with the Children's Center Annual Celebrity Golf Classic and has helped raise more than $100,000 at each of the past three events. He has also supported "Why Can't I Go," which for seven years has taken 20-30 underprivileged children to a Pistons game.

In his hometown of Denver, Billups is associated with the Port-Billups Leadership Academy with Regis University. The academy prepares children for college by promoting leadership, critical thinking, team work and conflict-resolution skills.

Billups is the fifth Piston to win the award. Dave Bing won in 1977, Kent Benson in 1982, Isiah Thomas in 1987 and Joe Dumars in 1994. Current Pistons assistant coach Terry Porter won the award in 1993 as a member of the Trail Blazers.
