NCAA Star Stephen Curry Follows NBA Dad

March 22 - The biggest star of this year's NCAA tournament so far has been smooth-shooting Stephen Curry of the Davidson Wildcats. He scored 40 points in an opening round 82-76 defeat of 7th-seeded Gonzaga, punctuated by a clutch 3-pointer with less than a minute left in the game. Where Curry gets his skills from is no mystery - his father is Dell Curry, one of the best long-range shooters during his 16-year NBA tenure.

Dell, now an assistant coach with the Charlotte Bobcats, ranks 17th all-time in career 3-point field goals made. He was perennially among the league's leaders in three-point shooting, and was always a concern for opposing defenses. Curry won the 1993-94 NBA Sixth Man Award, averaging a career-high 16.3 ppg for the Charlotte Hornets. Solid from the charity stripe, he hit a franchise-record 43 consecutive free throws from 11/5/94 to 12/6/94.

Stephen grew up absorbing basketball while hanging out with his dad. However, major colleges passed on him during the recruitment process, collectively feeling that he was too short and too slight. His first choice, Virginia Tech - Dell's alma mater - was among those who declined to see his outstanding potential. Needless to say, more than several schools probably regret that judgment now.

Curry and the Wildcats face a daunting test on Sunday against the 2nd-seeded Georgetown Hoyas, known for their punishing defense. Still the now-6'3" 180 lb shooting guard isn't intimidated and plans to give the Hoya defenders all they can handle.

Pre-tournament, Curry averaged 25.5 points for his sophomore season, fourth best in the country.
