NBA Finals Garners Strong Ratings for ABC
June 8 -- The NBA Finals are off to a strong ratings start, with game 1 of the championship series between the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers averaging a substantial 5.4/17 in the 18-49 demographic and 13.38 million viewers overall from 9:06-11:59 p.m. It is the best start for the Finals in four years and represents a 46 percent improvement in 18-49 viewers over the San Antonio-Cleveland opener of a year ago, which rated a 3.7/12.
The Celtics-Lakers matchup has revived a popular Finals pairing of the 1980s, and is the best possible combinations of playoff teams that ABC could have gotten.
The respective large hometown markets have been of great assistance. Game 1 did a 22.8 household rating/40 share in Los Angeles (the nation's No. 2 market) and a 21.7/37 in the # 7 market, Boston. The two cities accounted for roughly 18.6% of the national audience (1.82 million households out of 9.81 million).
