Jason Kidd Named 2007 Male Athlete of the Year

Recognizing his exceptional play and leadership on the 2007 USA Basketball Men's Senior National Team, USA Basketball announced on Jan. 16 that New Jersey Nets' All-Star guard Jason Kidd has been named the 2007 USA Basketball Male Athlete of the Year. Kidd helped pilot the 2007 USA Men's Senior National Team to a gold medal and 10-0 record at the 2007 FIBA Americas Championship. He averaged 4.6 assists a game to help the team secure its berth in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Starting in nine of the USA's 10 games, Kidd added 1.3 steals, 3.3 rebounds, and 1.8 points per game. Among all 2007 FIBA Americas Championship competitors, the point guard ranked first in assist-to-turnover ratio (9.20), second in 3-point field goal percentage and tied for third in assists.

Kidd facilitated the USA team averaging 116.7 points per game at the Championship, the most by a USA men's senior national team since the 1994 Championship team averaged 120.1 points a game; and the Americans overpowered their 10 opponents by an average of 39.5 points per game, the largest margin of victory by a USA senior squad since the 1992 U.S. Olympic Team defeated its opponents by 43.8 points a contest.

The USA team was in the forefront of the FIBA Americas Championship overall statistical rankings in 13 of the 17 categories. The team shot 58.7 percent from the field, 47.0 percent from 3-point and 72.0 percent from the foul line. They averaged 59.7 points by halftime of its 10 games and the average lead at halftime was 23.0 points.

The 2007 squad also surpassed eight USA team records for Olympic qualifying action and included a pair of single game marks, while team players wrote themselves into eight single game records and four competition records.

An Olympic gold medalist and a member of a total of six USA teams, Kidd has compiled a striking 44-0 record as a member of five USA Basketball senior national teams.
