Kevin Johnson Picks Up Key Endorsement in Mayoral Race

March 29 - Former NBA all-star Kevin Johnson has received a key endorsement from a local police organization in his run to unseat Sacramento Mayor Heather Fargo.

Brent Meyer, Sacramento Police Officers Association President, said that his organization favors Johnson's emphasis on public safety and economic development.

Johnson, known as "KJ" during his playing days, has been redeveloping a blighted Sacramento neighborhood since his 2000 retirement from the Phoenix Suns. Based on this experience, he indicates that violent crime has risen during Fargo's eight years in office and wants a greater effort to fight gang violence.

KJ is the chief executive officer of St. Hope, which runs charter schools and is involved in development projects in Oak Park, Sacramento. Johnson announced his candidacy for mayor at the Guild Theater, which is part of his Oak Park redevelopment project.
