NBA Referee Lockout 'Unavoidable'

Sept. 18 -- According to Lamell McMorris, the lead negotiator and spokesman for the NBA's referees union, a lockout appears "imminent and unavoidable" following the latest breakdown in talks.

McMorris said the officials had made an additional $1 million in concessions, but he believes that David Stern and the league are not interested in further discussions.

NBA general counsel and lead negotiator Rick Buchanan had a similarly pessimistic view.

Without a new deal, replacement officials will be used when the NBA preseason opens on Oct. 1.
