Ex-NBAer Ahead in Sacramento Mayoral Vote
June 10, 2008 - Former NBA star guard Kevin Johnson is reportedly leading his incumbent rival in Sacramento, California's mayoral race. The final results are not in yet, as a week after the June 3 election, it's still not clear just how many of the approximately 20,000 mail-in votes will go to Sacramento Mayor Heather Fargo or to Johnson. Election officials said it appears neither will capture a majority, sending them to a runoff in November.
When the count was recently updated, Johnson led Fargo 46 percent to 40 percent. Jill LaVine, Sacramento County's registrar of voters, indicated that about 10,000 ballots remained to be tallied and it could take several more days to know the outcome.
A runoff would mean five more months of campaigning in what has already been one of the most acrimonious political races in Sacramento's history. Along with hefty spending, it has featured character attacks and a replay of tawdry accusations against Johnson about previous sexual improprieties.
A native son and longtime resident Johnson, 42, is a local hero with celebrity magnetism that seems to draw an entourage of fans and news media wherever he goes. Adding to the glitz of his campaign have been sports pals like Magic Johnson, who endorsed him, and Shaquille O'Neal, who sponsored a fund-raiser.
